Oh my heart!!! Today is a day I have been waiting for!!! I’m a stickler for blogging roughly in order of when sessions were taken so I knew this one was coming up soon and I have been dying to share it!
While Jeff and I were in Denver in August, one of the highlights of that quick trip was that I had a chance to reconnect with my dear friend Mike. Mike and I were very close in college. He was one of my very best friends and someone I always knew I could count on. Through a series of things life threw at us, we drifted apart over the years as sometimes happens. We were always in each other’s hearts, but living so far apart and having no real connection pulling us together, we stayed just outside of each other’s orbit for many years.
A few years ago, I got an invitation to Mike’s wedding. He was marrying Bryan! To tell you I was elated would have been an understatement! Mike had come out to me many years ago. At the time I knew I was one of few people he told. For years I had hoped and prayed that he would find the strength to come out and embrace the amazing man that he was created to be. In finding Bryan, he found a reason to do that with someone that would love and support him no matter what that meant. Though I couldn’t attend the wedding (of course we’d already been booked), I thought about the two of them all weekend and hoped it was a beautiful day for them.
Fast forward to this most recent trip Jeff and I took out west. We are in the process of actively trying to reach out to the LGBTQ community to show that we are not only accepting, but beyond happy to work with them as they plan their weddings. However, we don’t have much of a portfolio to portray that yet. When I knew we’d be in the Denver area, I reached out to Mike and asked if he and Bryan would be open to being models for us. He was happy to take us up on that offer and we planned a day to hang out together taking photos.
To say that I was nervous as we pulled up in front of their house that day would have been an understatement. What if we’d grown into two people that no longer got along? What if we were too different now that all of this crazy life had happened to us? But the second I saw Mike’s big grin, it all melted away and I wrapped him up in the biggest hug not wanting to let go. Then I got to meet Bryan and immediately recognized in him the kind of man that complimented my friend and would love him throughout their lives. We fell into natural and easy conversation and it was as though the past decade hadn’t passed between us.
I will say that when we left that night I felt like I left part of my heart behind with Mike and Bryan. There’s something about old friends that know the true you and love you through and through that never can be replaced no matter the time or distance that passes. Denver will certainly be a place we plan to visit much more frequently in the years to come so we can keep in touch with these two.
Mike and Bryan, thank you for being our models for a day. For trusting us to take these and not make you look “too cheesy”. For being open to doing what we asked of you. We love you both more than you know.
