Today is going to be a little bit different here on the blog. We’re taking a deep dive into the creation of one single image. That’s it-one photo. Along with the story behind it and what all went into making it.
As most of you know, Jeff and I moved here to Galena 5 years ago in hopes of taking our photography business full time and being able to focus on weddings which we knew was our passion. The very first time we stepped foot on the property at Eagle Ridge Resort, I remember looking across the water and seeing this cliff. I turned to Jeff and told him that someday, we would do a photo with a couple on that cliff. It took us almost 4 years of working our butts off and educating ourselves and learning our equipment and finding the right people to help us, but we finally did it! Last summer we had the perfect couple and a handful of people willing to assist us and we trekked our way out to the edge of the cliff. Christine and Kyle were put into climbing harnesses underneath their outfits for safety purposes, we had two assistants holding lighting to get just the right angle on them, and Jeff went back across the lake to take the shot with an assistant helping him on that side of the water. It took us nearly 4 hours to pull this off for a lot of different reasons. 1-the weather would NOT cooperate with us (it kept raining off and on which was not the look we wanted!). 2-since we were shooting across a lake, it was hard to share images back and forth so Jeff would take a shot and email the photo so I could see how the dress was flowing on the side of the cliff and make adjustments. 3-again, in shooting across an expanse as wide as the lake, we use off camera flashes that are triggered remotely from the camera. So at first we were having a heck of a time getting them to “talk” to each other across that distance. But finally-FINALLY-the stars all aligned and what we created is an image that I’m immensely proud of and that Christine and Kyle loved!
Thank you to every single person that put time and effort into helping us create this photo. We are so grateful for all of you!!!!
We had a series of weddings that took place on crazy cold days. Our New Year’s Eve Wedding was no exception! Even with furry wraps for their shoulders, Emily and her bridesmaids were shivering, but that didn’t stop them from having so much fun together!!!!
Emily started the day with her bridesmaids, mom, and future mother in law at Fringe Salon in Dubuque. Fringe has an amazing atmosphere with exposed brick throughout and really pretty lighting fixtures. We also love that the stylists there are EXCELLENT at what they do! Plus, they treat our brides like royalty from the second they walk through the door 🙂
Weren’t Emily’s details gorgeous?!?! I loved her ring set! After Fringe we all went to the Grand River Center to get dressed. Emily helped her mom and all of her bridesmaids get ready then they all helped her get ready before she went to her first look with Jake. Jake and his guys were getting ready in the hotel next door. This was a pretty study group of guys! Emily and Jake’s first look was one filled with smiles! Don’t they look so happy? Even if it was freezing, the sky looked amazing that day!!!
Emily’s dress was a custom designed Kenneth Winston made just for her and it fit perfectly!!! It was the most beautiful dress! These flowers from HandPickd were stunning!!!! The wedding party joined us for awhile and we had fun taking pictures with them around the Grand River Center. Because Jake and Emily wanted to have a nighttime ceremony, we snuck them out before the ceremony started to grab a few sunset photos with them. Isn’t this sunset beautiful?!?!?
Emily and her dad exchanged this sweet look right before he walked her down the aisle. This is one of my favorite moments of their day!
Emily and her mom spent months making these gorgeous bottles! They were the perfect centerpiece! The cupcakes that J&D Catering supplied were so good!!!! There were 5 different flavors and I have to say that the Pink Champagne one was off the charts delicious!!!! The party started off with some great speeches from both Emily & Jake’s dads! The whole night of dancing began with Emily and Jake’s first dance. Then they invited their parents out for dancing, and finally the dance floor was open for everyone!!!! The countdown to New Year’s was electric throughout the guests! Everyone grabbed their party hats, poppers, champagne, and noisemakers and got ready to count down to the New Year. As the New Year struck, Jeff and I worked together to fire off a confetti canon as Jeff took the photo at just the right moment. It was so fun working together to capture that shot! Emily and her dad wound up the night dancing away together. It was crazy fun!!!
Emily & Jake, we are so glad that we got to share your day with you!!!!
